Garlic exports hit a record low in February

China is the world's leading garlic producer, consumer and exporter. Most of the world's garlic comes from China. But garlic exports hit a new low in February 2022, with many fewer fresh or refrigerated garlic exports.

According to customs data, the export volume of fresh or refrigerated garlic in February 2022 was 69,900 tons, and the cumulative export volume was 208,900 tons; the export value was US$73.7406 million, and the cumulative export value was US$216.6726 million; the average export price was US$1,054.29 / ton, the export volume decreased by 49.71% month-on-month and 21.83% year-on-year. Data show that exports this month hit a new low in nearly six years.

The traditional Chinese festival Spring Festival is also in February. Most workers of packaging companies return to their hometowns for the festival and so workers are hard to find, and export orders generally decrease. In addition, Indonesia's quota has not yet been issued and the export volume continues to shrink. Although the export volume in February was not high over the years, the export volume of fresh or refrigerated garlic in February this year hit a six-year low, which is partly related to a series of chain reactions triggered by the global pandemic.

Shipping risks, labor costs, and return-with-no-load rates have all increased to varying degrees. A large number of export containers are piled up in foreign ports and cannot be operated, resulting in a relative shortage of containers, and the serious problem of port congestion, which leads to unstable shipping schedules. Such problems will restrict the export of Chinese garlic for a long time.

The average export price of garlic rises mainly
The average export price of fresh or refrigerated garlic in February was US$1,054.29/ton, up 2.54%, which is US$26.16/ton month-on-month, and with a year-on-year increase of US$15.73/ ton, an increase of 1.51%.

The average export price of dried garlic in February 2022 was US$2,865.46/ton, an increase of US$80.63/ton or 2.9% month-on-month. The year-on-year increase of US$189.09 / ton, an increase of 7.07%. The average export price of dried garlic in China has shown an overall upward trend since September 2021. The average export price of other types of garlic was US$2,307.98/ton, a decrease of US$197.08 or 7.87% from the previous month.
